MINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND MINISTER FOR INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS
Grace Grace was first elected to State Parliament in October 2007 and remained the Member for Brisbane Central until March 2012. She was re-elected as the Member for Brisbane Central in January 2015 and again in November 2017 after the seat was re-named McConnel.

Grace was appointed Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Minister for Racing and Minister for Multicultural Affairs in December 2015 and successfully implemented a series of important legislative reforms including the Racing Integrity Act, the Multicultural Recognition Act and the Industrial Relations Act 2016.

Following the 2017 state election, Grace Minister for Industrial Relations – both areas she is passionate about. Grace understands the importance of education and her tireless advocacy in this area will see a new high school built in Fortitude Valley to be opened
by 2020.

During her career, Grace has had extensive board experience with organisations including Sunsuper, Energex and the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund.

She has worked with local community organisations in her electorate including P&Cs, the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, Teneriffe Progress Association, Queensland Aids Council (QuAC), Fortitude Valley Chamber of Commerce and many others.

Grace has lived her whole life in her electorate where she and her husband Michael raised their daughter, Alex.

ALLAN PARKER

Allan Parker is a Behavioural Scientist and the Managing Director of Peak Performance Development Pty Ltd, a Sydney based consultancy Company, operating in the areas of Negotiation, Organisational Change Facilitation, Training and Dispute Management.

Allan Parker’s areas of expertise in training include Facilitation, Negotiation, Presentation Skills, Dispute Management as well as Management and Leadership Development. In consulting, his work has included the facilitation of Public Policy, Organisational Change, Strategic Planning, Corporate Restructures and Mergers with many leading organizations in Australia and Internationally.

His clients have included Microsoft in 11 countries, AMP, BNP Paribas in 4 countries, Macquarie Bank in 4 countries, NSW Bar Association, Deutsche Bank, five different Ombudsman’s Offices in Australia and New Zealand, The Royal College of Physician (UK), the OECD and United Nations. He is the co-author of the best-selling book Switch on Your Brain; author of the Negotiator’s Toolkit, and is one of the coauthors of Beyond Yes - Negotiating and Networking.

Allan was a member of the High Level Consultative Committee at the OECD that was responsible for the development and ratification of Global Policy for Small to Medium Enterprise (2000 to 2004 involving 85 OECD Countries). More recently Allan moderated 2 meetings at the United Nations World Investment Forum in Ghana, Africa. In April 2009 the National Speakers Association of Australia awarded him with the Educator of the year Excellence Award. 2012 he was the National Speakers Association Australia, Nevin Award Recipient; Australia’s Highest Professional Speakers Award.

In 2012 he wrote Australia’s first degree in Negotiation for the Australian Catholic University. This degree was approved and accredited in March 2013 In addition to his professional achievements he has been a scratch golfer and has run 16 marathons and 11 ultra Marathons (including 24 hours twice) From this diverse and interesting background he brings to his presentations and sessions a spontaneous, dynamic and somewhat unpredictable style.

ANDREW PIERPOINT

Andrew Pierpoint is President of the Australian Secondary Principals’ Association – the peak body for School Leaders across
Australia. He previously was President of the Queensland Secondary Principals’ Association for four (4) years.

Andrew has had extensive experience, over 35 years, in High Schools as a science teacher, Head of Department Science, Deputy Principal and Principal as well as having several system positions in the
support of Principals. Throughout his career, Andrew has worked in complex rural and remote communities through to large regional and metropolitan schools. He has led communities and reference groups at district, regional, state and national levels.

Andrew’s special interests are the provision of professional learning for school leaders, Principal Health and Wellbeing and is highly active in school sport.

Andrew has demonstrated a passion for State education in Queensland for many years and possess an excellent understanding of the Principalship from first hand experience. Most importantly, Andrew has a genuine desire to make a real difference for School Leaders in the application of their ever increasing, complex roles in schools and the broader community.

HETTY JOHNSTON

AM, GAICD
Hetty Johnston AM, GAICD is Founder & Executive Chair of Bravehearts Foundation Ltd, Australia’s leading child protection
advocate. A born lobbyist, Hetty is a woman of passion and determination who has succeeded in highlighting the crime of paedophilia and child sexual assault to media, families, schools and the general community both nationally and internationally.

Hetty established Bravehearts in 1997, an organisation with a Vision to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child.

Hetty’s most recent accolades include:
  • 2016 Inducted into Australian Businesswomen’s ‘Hall of Fame’,
  • 2015 Queensland Australian of the Year,
  • 2014 Awarded Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Hetty has been recognised for her outstanding contributions to child protection with numerous awards and nominations over her career since 1996.
In 2013 Hetty was awarded Ernst & Young Northern Australia’s Social Entrepreneur of the year, Westpac’s 2013 ‘100 Women of Influence’ and YWCA Queensland’s ‘125 Leading Women’. She was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2010 and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Community Practice and Governance (March 2010). In
early 2009, Hetty was recognised as one of approximately 70 outstanding leaders worldwide, receiving the prestigious annual
Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Award. Hetty is the recipient of two Australian Lawyers Alliance Civil
Justice Awards (2003, 2004).

Hetty is a much sought after speaker at Local, State, Federal and International levels. Hetty works with government and nongovernment
agencies on legislative reform, submissions, lobbying and research to improve child protection and political accountability in Australia.

HUGH BRADLOW

Hugh S. Bradlow is President of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, a body which elects the best minds in technology to its Fellowship and then commits them to developing strategies which will turn Australia into a world leading technology economy.

With a 22-year career at Telstra Corporation, he is the Chief Scientist (in which role he acted as a “forward scout” looking at the longer term technology directions and technology disruption that will impact Telstra and its customers), Chief Technology
Officer and Head of Innovation at Telstra, and Managing Director of Telstra Research Laboratories.

Before joining Telstra in September 1995, Professor Bradlow was Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Wollongong in Australia and Professor of Electrical Engineering (Digital Systems) at the University of Cape Town.

Professor Bradlow is a graduate in electrical engineering from the University of Cape Town in 1973 and received the D.Phil. degree for research in experimental nuclear physics from the University of Oxford. He has also attended the Stanford Executive Program. He is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Wollongong, a Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne, and a recipient of a Centenary Medal from the Commonwealth of Australia.

Hugh has been a company director for a number of innovation-based entities, including Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Ltd, Allen & Buckeridge, Seed Stage Ventures Board of Directors, Telstra R&D Management Pty Ltd (Executive Chair), Wollongong Uniadvice (Pty) Ltd, Telecommunications Society of Australia and IEEE Communications Society Board of Governors amongst others.
He is globally recognised as a thought leader in telecommunications and was elected as the joint 2009 Australian Telecommunications Ambassador of the Year, named by Global Telecom Business as one of the most 100 most influential telecommunications executives in the world and Smart Company designated him as one of the 12 most influential people in Australian ICT.

During his career at Telstra he has given over 400 presentations, being in high demand as a speaker on technology topics and innovation. His insights into the future are based on applying a deep understanding of emerging technologies to thought experiments about how consumers and businesses will use these technologies once they become mainstream.

Dr Jason Fox is a motivation strategy and design expert who shows forward thinking leaders how to influence work culture, drive progress and build for the future of work.

A big part of Jason’s work involves unpacking the latest trends and developments in work culture and gamification - removing the hype
and adding the science to make work work.

His adventures include working with the senior leaders of multinational organisations (to rethink leadership and culture) and the leaders of multi-million dollar projects (to make strategy happen).

Such clients include the likes of Fortune 500 companies like PepsiCo and other multinationals like McDonalds, Toyota, Microsoft, Gartner, Beam Suntory and Sony, through to companies like Suncorp, Optus, Telstra, Sydney Water, AMP, and The International Institute for Research.

Jason is the director of The Future of Leadership Melbourne, the founding director of Clever Happenings and a global ambassador for the ideas execution conference 99U. He is also the bestselling
author of The Game Changer and How to Lead a Quest, and his research has been featured in the likes of Smart Company, Business Review Weekly and The Australian Financial Review.

When not liberating the world from poorly designed processes and work, Jason enjoys partaking in extreme sports like reading, coffee snobbery and fruit ninja.

KURT FEARNLEY

Australian wheelchair racer Kurt Fearnley OAM.

Kurt is one of Australia’s most well known & respected athletes.

Winner of some of the worlds most prestigious marathons, in London, Paris, Rome, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Chicago & New York. The latter two, 5 times. He won the Paralympic men’s wheelchair marathon in Athens in 2004 and retained his title in Beijing in 2008. With marathon podium finishes in London 2012 & Rio 2016 cementing 4 consecutive Paralympic Marathon medals.

In his Rio campaign Kurt had the honour of serving as the Captain of the Australian Paralympic Team. In total Kurt has Thirteen
Paralympic medals spanning across 5 games. He’s also a 6 times world champion from 800m to the marathon. His marathon personal best is 1hour 18minutes & 51seconds set in Boston in 2011.

Off the racing circuit Kurt has been a winning crew member of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, taking line honours in 2011 on board
the yacht Loyal. However he is most well known for his amazing feat of crawling the 96km Kokoda track.

Kurt is actively involved in various charities as a board member, patron & ambassador. In 2016 Kurt was elected by his peers to be one of six Summer Paralympic Athletes to serve on the International Paralympic Committee’s Athletes Commission.

On the 22nd of January 2013 he was given the annual Australian honour of giving the 2013 Australia Day Address.

ALAN REID

Alan Reid is Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of South Australia. He has held numerous leadership positions in education, and been a key figure in some significant policy developments at the state and national levels. Alan publishes widely in such areas as curriculum and education policy and gives many invited keynotes and talks. He is a passionate supporter of public education, and currently Chairs the Public Education Advisory Committee in South Australia which reports to the SA Minister of Education. Professor Reid’s contributions to education have been recognised through a number of awards at state and national levels, including the Gold Medal of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL). On Australia Day, 2012, he was made
a Member of the Order of Australia (AM); and was named as one of four finalists for 2017 South Australian of the Year.

ASHANTI BRANCH

Ashanti Branch, M.Ed., is the Founder and the Executive Director of The Ever Forward Club. He’s made a career of mentoring youth and showing students how they can achieve their potential. While Branch received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, he soon realized that teaching was his calling.

Raised in Oakland, CA by a single mother on welfare, Ashanti Branch forged a new path and attended California Polytechnic – San Luis Obispo, studying Civil Engineering.

Despite a career as a construction project manager, Ashanti quickly found his true calling in teaching after tutoring struggling students. After discovering his life’s passion, he hoped to ignite enthusiasm in those he taught.

As a first-year teacher in 2004, he founded The Ever Forward Club. The organization mentors middle and high school students, particularly underserved and at-risk men of color. Branch’s work has helped 100% of students in The Ever Forward Club graduate high school.

Branch has since spent 24 years mentoring youth, 11 years as a math teacher assisting inner-city students and was awarded a Fulbright Exchange Fellowship to India among other accolades.

Ashanti Branch is on a mission to change the way schools help students realize their potential.

BUNDABERG STATE HIGH SCHOOL
Cally Nielsen started her career in education through state school alternative education programs. This is where she developed a passion for working with students who often get lost, or simply don’t fit the traditional system. Throughout her career, and continuing in her current role as Deputy Principal at Bundaberg State High School, Cally has searched for unique ways to support the needs of students (from flipped classrooms to passion-based projects), she firmly believes, that “Every student CAN succeed”.

FORMER PRINCIPAL – TEMPLESTOWE COLLEGE AND LEADER OF THE EDREVOLUTION
Peter Hutton was appointed Principal of Templestowe College (TC) in 2009. It was a broken school with just 286 local students and 23 year sevens. Today TC has over 1100 students and was recently recognised as one of the most innovative schools in the world. At 50, Peter’s varied experiences include 20 years’ as a Principal/Assistant Principal in 4 schools, being an Insolvency Accountant with PWC, being an officer in the Australian Army Reserve and running his own Property Development and Tree Lopping Businesses. As a dyslexic, Peter sees the world differently, and has spent his life challenging rules, assumptions and conventions.

JON ROUSE

Detective Inspector Jon Rouse has 34 years’ operational service with the Queensland Police Service in Australia and has been an appointed Detective for 28 years, with 20 years devoted to investigating crimes against children.

In 2001 Jon implemented Australia’s first undercover operation targeting internet child sex offenders, and for 13 years he has led the operations team at Task Force Argos, a specialist unit responsible for the investigation of child sex offenders.

Jon has instigated and led multiple international operations and has also delivered training and presentations on online child exploitation investigations to law enforcement officers across Australia, Asia, Europe and South America.

He has represented Australian law enforcement at United Nations conferences in Austria, Kenya and Thailand and accepted the International Cyber Crime Gold award on behalf of Task Force Argos in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Jon is currently the Sub Group Chair of the INTERPOL Covert Internet Investigators Group and is a Director with The Society for
the Policing of Cyberspace (POLCYB).

He is the recipient of three Commissioners certificates (Operational) for his leadership and investigative work, two Excellence awards for Child Protection Prevention and is the recipient of the Queensland Police Medal, the National Service Medal the National Police Medal and the Exemplary Conduct Medal.

CLAIRE MADDEN

Claire Madden is the nation’s leading voice on Generation Z. As an author, social researcher, keynote speaker and media commentator, Claire is in demand as an expert in interpreting social trends, demographics and implications of generational change. Claire is the authorof Hello Gen Z: Engaging the Generation of Post-Millennials.

Claire is highly regarded for her dynamic and engaging presentations where she translates robust, research-based content into strategic applications for educators, managers and business leaders. Claire is commissioned by some of the nation’s largest companies and leading brands to interpret the changing landscape and communicate the implications for business and society.

As a media commentator, Claire is regularly interviewed on prominent television programs including The Drum, The Project, The Today Show, SkyNews, Sunrise and The Morning Show, as well as on the radio and in print media. With academic qualifications in communications and postgraduate studies in leadership, on the board for a financial services company and on the Advisory Board of UTS Business School.

Claire is also the Founder and Director of the research based strategy and communications agency, Hello Clarity.

Mark Breckenridge is President of the Queensland Secondary Principals’ Association taking up that position in January 2018.

Mark has more than thirty years of experience as Principal across a diverse range of schools from small one-teacher schools, P-10 rural through to regional and metropolitan high schools with large student enrolments.

During this wide-ranging career Mark has developed an appreciation for the complexities inherent in all schools, regardless of location or size. School leaders are the critical component in school success; addressing issues of complexity, building and sustaining relationships that help enable a culture of continuous improvement. As a Principal Mark sought to ensure that his schools were a place where community matters. He believes strongly in the value of partnerships across the community-with families, business and industry and the wider community.
